There are various methods of preparation of cinnamic acid, the most commonly used industrial method is the Perkin reaction, another common way of synthesis of cinnamic acid involves the Knoevenagel condensation, in this reaction the reactants benzaldehyde and malonic acid in the presence of a weak base undergo acid-catalyzed decarboxylation.

It may treat periodontitis. Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gum tissue, and periodontal disease is associated with cardiovascular, endocrine and reproductive disorders. A study in rats found that cinnamic acid reduced inflammation caused by periodontitis and promote bone growth in the area.

 

Potential cancer treatment. Studies have shown that cinnamic acid and its derivatives can inhibit oncogenic proteins and may be an adjuvant therapy for the treatment of lung and breast cancers.

 

May provide UV protection. Cinnamic acid is a common ingredient in many cosmetic products used to provide UV protection. Cinnamic acid is sensitive to and activated by UV radiation and has antioxidant properties.

 

It can reduce the risk of dengue fever. Some derivatives of cinnamic acid have larvicidal properties and have been shown to destroy the larvae of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya, and Zika viruses.
