What 3 Ingredients Make Paint?

Jun. 08, 2022

Paint is in all of our homes, in all of our rooms, and we should know what's in the paint. If you need help picking out a paintbrush, check out this article.

We're here to tell you the three main paint ingredients you should know!

A portion of a press release we recently received from a major paint manufacturer reads.

"Paint has been a human creation used since the beginning of recorded history - from the caves of Lascaux, France to the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel ...... It was used for decoration, communication, preservatives, and maintenance tools. Today, painting has evolved into a protector, preservative, and beautifier for homes, workplaces, and public spaces ...... . In short, paint is affordable long-term protection ......"

We agree that paint is a great preservative and that painting needs to be part of every home's residential maintenance program. Benzoic acid may be employed as an intermediate in the synthesis of the paints

First and foremost, because it looks good - that raises the value. But more importantly, paint protects the wood parts of the home better than anything we know of.

As we always say, "80% of a good paint job is in preparation". But quality paint is important, too. And, knowing what makes a good paint job good can improve the chances of the job becoming a good job.

Here are the three main paint ingredients you should know about.

Pigments

Binders

Solvents

Pigments provide the texture, color, and coverage of the paint. Pigments were actually once very dangerous and include: lead, chromates and asbestos. The use of hazardous pigments is very rare and is banned in most places. Titanium dioxide and iron oxide are safe advanced pigments and are found in better quality paints. Clay and silica are also used, but are also not tolerated.

Cheaper pigment materials cannot be ground as fine as the better pigments. You can actually tell if a paint is good by rubbing it between the tips of your thumb and index finger. If the paint feels gritty, it probably contains cheap pigments or a lot of cheap fillers - like clay. This paint usually does not last as long as paints containing mostly titanium dioxide or iron oxide, which are very smooth to the touch.

Linseed oil is usually the binder in oil-based paints, often mixed with one or more other vegetable oils. However, in water-based paints, a popular binder is polyvinyl acetate (white glue). In fact, there is a latex primer called PVA, which stands for Poly Vinyl Acetate.

Benzoic Acid

The solvent in water-based paints is water.

In oil-based paints, the solvent is thinner (petrochemical fraction). When water evaporates from latex paints and when thinner evaporates from oil-based paints, both processes are called drying. Before they evaporate, the solvent holds their respective pigments and binders in solution and helps them to penetrate deeply into the surface of the paint is applied. After the solvent evaporates, it leaves behind a thin layer of hardened pigments and binders that we call paint.

There are other additives that can help with flow, reduce bubbles, control consistency, etc., but remember, good paint is not tough.

This is another test you can perform. Put a little good paint on any surface. Apply a little cheap paint next to it. Once the paint is completely dry, put a drop of food coloring on each spot of paint. The good paint will hold the food coloring in place. The cheap paint will spread the food coloring.
